Here is a little BlackBerry spyware story I want to share with you. (Keep in mind that this story is fictional, and is meant to provide an example of how BlackBerry spyware can be used by employers to monitor and locate their staff who are using company issued cell phones.)
A little while back while traveling for work my car broke down. I was on a freeway a good distance from my destination and even further from my setting out point. As you can imagine I was none too pleased to be stuck at the side of the road unable to get my car moving. I rang my boss on the company provided BlackBerry cellphone while inside my company provided car.
After I had my rant about how useless the car was etc, he asked me where exactly I was so he could get a tow truck to me. That was one of the most difficult questions he asked me that day. I told him the freeway number and I what time I had left my home, all good information but unless he knew exactly what speed I had been traveling it didn’t really help locate me. I was further surprised however when my boss just laughed lightly and said reassuringly “don’t worry we’ll find you.”
He ended the call on that note, I have to say I was uncomfortable, but that didn’t last long when I saw the tow truck from the nearest town pulling up on the shoulder behind my car. I asked the driver how he knew I was near, his enigmatic answer was “your boss gave me your exact location”. On returning to the office next day, I immediately confronted the boss, accusing him of having some sort of magic sixth sense. He sat me down and explained it wasn’t sixth sense but common sense.
The company had installed BlackBerry spyware on my company issued BlackBerry phone, and one of the features of this software is GPS tracking. Using this BlackBerry spyware feature, my boss was able to log on to a secure internet site and view a map (Google Maps) this allowed my boss to pinpoint exactly where I had broken down and get the nearest tow truck to me quickly.
He explained to me a little bit how this type of spy software works, and went on to explain that BlackBerry spyware provides a lot more than just GPS location data. BlackBerry spyware also sends details of calls, sms message, email and even internet logs to the secure site. This allows my boss to keep a track of my communications and ensure I am using his cellphone for work only. Once I got over my sense of being spied on I realized that this type of BlackBerry spy software was a good idea. As a business manager it makes sense to keep track of the costs incurred by the business and BlackBerry spyware allows my boss to keep an eye on company costs, which ultimately helps protect my job.
BlackBerry spyware is a cost effective way of tracking company costs and ensuring efficiency from your staff. I know that I was happy my boss had installed the software when I saw that tow truck arrive, it made what could have been a real bad day into a reasonable one.
